Stage One: Often, the Story Exists Before the Script

Which story is worth the bet has already been settled by someone before anyone shouts “action” on a short drama set. Track a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the pipeline. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the source for ReelShort’s Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance built around a secret child. A novel by Cora Reilly is the source of Bound by Honor, which ReelShort debuted on November 1, 2025, as a mafia arranged-marriage series. A web novel and webtoon lie behind Quiet reelshorts.org in the Office!, a 2026 office romance from Korea that carries a 19+ age rating. Several app owners also run reading businesses, so source material sits close at hand: Crazy Maple Studio produces the interactive-story app Chapters, Holywater operates the books app My Passion, and GoodNovel is GoodShort’s Google Play developer name. Where no book exists, writers lean on reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. The script’s task is to compress a long drama story into scenes, each landing a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.

Stage Two: Casting Recognizable Faces

It is in casting that the format’s economics surface on screen. When you scan the cast lists for short series on IMDb, the same names keep turning up. Noah Fearnley led ReelShort’s werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024 and returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star. In 2025, Rosa Singerman headlined two GoodShort titles, Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia, the latter opposite Franky Cammarata. A lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start, which matters a great deal when a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over. In Los Angeles, DramaBox runs a production team. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort’s users were women, so producers are also casting with a specific viewer in mind.

Stage Three: Seventy Episodes Shot in About Eight Days

A Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days, according to TheWrap. Wikipedia’s overview of the format is similar, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. A 70-episode series shot in eight days requires close to nine episodes’ worth of material every working day, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers that sell overseas have reported lower numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture placed a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. Per finished episode, that works out to roughly $1,400 to $2,100. Dubbed Chinese adaptations made up about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles Jiuzhou reported it had made for overseas markets, and original overseas productions made up 20 percent. Dubbing lets a studio recycle a finished domestic series, so the pricey shoot happens only once.

Stage Four: Editing Down to 60–100 Seconds

In the edit suite, the footage is chopped into episodes of 60 to 100 seconds, framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. The cliffhanger is the house style, acting as the mechanism that carries you from one installment to the next. Taken together, the slivers of a 70-episode series add up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary widely by title; GoodShort’s official pages, for example, list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King’s Return. Viewers who never open the app can still watch the same footage, since ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Put simply, editors are shaping video dramas for several screens at once.

Stage Five: Choosing Where the Paywall Falls

Finally comes a creative decision that is also a commercial one. According to TheWrap, the standard model leaves the first eight to ten episodes free. According to ReelShort’s own blog, its free run is usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. Beyond that point, episodes are unlocked with coins; ReelShort’s blog lists the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. Watching ads also earns coins, and according to the same blog one ad unlocks two premium episodes; alternatively, you can buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews. The price in your store may be different, because prices vary by country, platform and promotion. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Tools that promise a way around the wall, including coin generators and modded “unlimited coins” apps, are unofficial and best avoided.

Stage Six: Animation and AI-Made Series

The camera drops out entirely in the latest production stage. ReelShort now carries animated motion comics that run alongside its live-action library. Arthur Lancaster, the lead of the 58-episode family saga The Lost Heir, loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as “Johnny” and eventually exposes the foster sister who kept framing him. A 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, Shattered Vows is an AI-generated animated motion comic with no cast listed; it follows heiress Vanessa Windsor seeking revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister’s killer escape. Do not mix it up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares the name. More than 80 percent of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, according to 36Kr, which means the app has gone the furthest; 36Kr also reported that its annualized revenue passed $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island featuring fruit contestants, showed on TikTok in March 2026 that AI video dramas have spread beyond the apps too, before critics widely labeled it “AI slop”.

Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line

Established studios have taken notice, most clearly Fox Entertainment. In October 2025, Fox acquired an equity stake in Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app. Fox also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Fox-produced series already available on the app include Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart’s Offside. In January 2026, Holywater raised a further $22 million in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama took the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. When a network-scale producer signs up to that volume, it suggests the eight-day shoot has shifted from curiosity to line item.

A Quick Look at the Production Line

Setting the stages side by side brings the logic of the business into focus. Much of the rest is built around the shoot, the fixed, expensive block. Pre-tested scripts tend to arrive as novels or familiar tropes, known faces anchor the casting, and cliffhangers that feed a paywall shape the edit. Although fans who search for a “reel short drama” usually have ReelShort titles in mind, TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. Using only publicly reported figures, the table below sums up typical time and cost at each stage. Where no reliable number has been published, it says so rather than guessing.

Stage Usual time / cost What takes place
Source material and scripting No public number A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly’s novel
The casting stage No public figure Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage
Shoot 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) 50 to 70+ episodes are filmed in a vertical frame
Edit Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds The footage is sliced into installments that each end on a cliffhanger
Release and paywall The first 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); about 60 coins for each later episode on ReelShort Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026
AI and animation Costs undisclosed Motion comics like The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave’s new releases made with AI
Studio co-production 200+ titles across two years (Fox for My Drama) An established studio creates vertical series for an app
